Where the Term Horsepower Came From

You are probably familiar with the term horsepower but where did it come from? A man by the name of James Watt came up with it in the 218th century to measure the amount of power that his steam engines had. It was thought that he came up with it when he was working with ponies in the coal mines and saw how powerful they were and wanted to compare their strength to his steam engines.

The term stuck and we still use it today to show just how powerful our cars are. One horsepower is about the same as a pony hauling 33 pounds for one minute. the more horsepower, the more power.

Come see us here at Erwin Chrysler Dodge Jeep today to see how powerful our vehicles can be and find the one that you want and the one that will get you through the workday and the daily commute.
